Pictures: 24 drawings by Nelson Mandela going on sale
Drawings by former president Nelson Mandela will be showcased at the Belgravia Gallery in London, ahead of a sale which is expected to draw a “substantial” sum of money.
The pieces were individually drawn and signed by Mandela in the years following his presidency.
The artworks, done in charcoal and pastel, have remained ‘hidden’ for the past decade, and came about as a result of Mandela signing a commercial tie-up with the Belgravia Gallery.
According to a report by the Telegraph, he began sketching in his dining room at his home in Johannesburg in 2002. The gallery owner said the works are genuine, have been fully authenticated and are backed by the Mandela family.
The drawings reflect Mandela’s time as a prisoner on Robben Island, as well as other sights and objects that were significant to him in his life.
Mandela died in December 2013, aged 95.
According to reports, Mandela’s eldest surviving child, Makaziwe, is due to fly to London ahead of the exhibition’s official opening later this week.
Here is a selection of some of the drawings. These include a limited series of lithographs produced by Mandela and sold – the originals of which are part of the collection.
