Watch out for this SARS eFiling scam
FNB is warning its customers about an increase in banking scams in South Africa.
“In an attempt to steal personal details, fraudsters often send emails with attachments purporting to be a payment notification or bank statement,” said FNB.
The bank used an example of a SARS scam that is currently doing the rounds ahead of the country’s “tax season” – which starts on 1 July.
“Fraudsters are notorious for sending emails, often with links or attachments purporting to be a payment notification or bank statement. In this case the email requests you to redeem an epayment from SARS.”
If the recipient clicks the link in the mail, they are presented with a login screen mimicking the SARS homepage.
“You will be requested to select your banking institution and enter your login details. The fraudsters will then be in a position to access your banking profile with the details you have provided.”
