The 101 ANC veterans that once stood in solidarity with civil group Save SA in its bid to fight against corruption and state capture, has now dropped them to engage in closed-door meetings with the ruling party.

Speaking on behalf of the collective ANC 101, ANC stalwart Wally Serote has said that the ANC veterans would not be standing with Save SA as it launches a fresh campaign to initiate a motion of no confidence in president Jacob Zuma.

Save SA is planning to launch a ‘people’s motion of no confidence’ against Zuma and his cabinet at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg today (Wednesday, 23 November), urging all citizens and groups that align with its cause, to join them.

The civil group is spearheaded by ANC veteran and businessman Sipho Pityana, who has been outspoken against president Jacob Zuma, not hiding the fact that he believes the president is dishonourable and detrimental to the country, and needs to be removed from power.

According to Serote, the ANC 101 will not be a part of any motion of no confidence in Zuma, as the group is currently in meetings with the ANC – with another set to take place on Friday.

Serote said that the veterans would respect the ANC structures – but it would not pre-empt the outcome of the current discussions. Until the discussions with the ANC are over, it would not engage in any public commentary that could be seen as divisive.

Some of the ANC veterans part of the ANC 101 met with ANC leadership this week to find common ground and address concerns raised by the stalwarts regarding the presidency, state capture and the direction of South Africa.

The ANC 101 have proposed that a consultative conference be set up for all party members to engage openly on the issued the country faces.

Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said that the party would consider it.
