South Africa is getting a new ‘child passport’ in 2017
The Department of Home Affairs has announced that South Africa will be getting a new ‘child passport’ in 2017, to help make travelling out of the country easier for families.
According to DHA director general, Mkuseli Apleni, the new document will hopefully simplify the process for South Africans to travel abroad, while also working to combat child trafficking in the country.
The document will list both the child’s birth parents, which cannot be changed, removing the need for families to travel with an unabridged birth certificate.
Currently, South Africa only offers passports to citizens over the age of 16, which last for 10 years. Child passports are also issued for children 15 years or under, but are non-renewable and require that an unabridged certificate be present.
