Mass strike action by South African taxi drivers in Gauteng is having an impact on Vodacom’s customer service lines.

The mobile operator said that, because of the strikes, customer service agents at its call centre have been delayed and this has led to a backlog in call volumes.

“Please bear with us while we work on the backlog. You can also use the MyVodacom App or help.vodacom.co.za for self-service support,” it said.

Taxi drivers in Gauteng have gone on a province-wide strike, blocking roads in Johannesburg and Tshwane.

Employees and school children who make use of public transport have been forced to return home due to no transport being available, while side and alternative routes have become congested as road users try to avoid the go-slows and road blocks on the national highways.

The grievances raised by the taxi industry include provisions of the National Land Transport Act, matters related to operations, the Integrated Public Transport Network or the BRT system, compensation for an operator surrendering an operating license, the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme, and the public transport subsidy.

The strike action and protests are expected to continue along all major routes as the drivers march to hand over a memorandum at the Union Buildings in Pretoria at 13h00.
