The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) says that the complaint brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) will be heard tonight at 18:00.

Last week (Friday, 11 April) the DA complained that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was censoring the party by not allowing its advertisement to be broadcast.

According to the DA, this happened after the public broadcaster received a notice to pull the DA’s political advertisement.

Yesterday Icasa said that the complaint had been handed to its Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC) and that a public hearing would be conducted on Thursday, 17 April 2014.

Following yesterday’s announcement, the DA threatened to take legal action against Icasa for not following its own rules to hear the complaint within 48 hours.

“The Authority would like to make it clear that in referring the matter to the CCC on an urgent basis, it acted within the 48-hours timelines as required by the Elections Regulations,” Icasa said in its statement today.

However, Icasa added that “due to the urgency of this matter” and its “commitment to expediting the resolution of this complaint”, it had rescheduled the hearing for tonight.
