Afrihost Mobile will launch a new out-of-bundle (OOB) product at a flat fee of R0.10 per megabyte (MB) across all the company’s data packages.

The new OOB price stretches even further below the old, and now defunct, price set by Cell C of R0.15.

According to the ISP, users of its new service will be able to set a maximum amount for out-of-bundle fees which, once reached, will result in service being capped.

This will avoid any ‘OOB bill shock’, it said.

“This will ensure that the OOB shark is still caged and they never get surprise overage bills from us,” explained Afrihost CEO, Gian Visser.

After the new service is launched, Afrihost Mobile clients will have two options:

  • A capped service, which can be topped up at R99 per GB when the monthly usage limit is reached; or
  • An opt-in out-of-bundle service, where OOB data use will be charged at 10c per MB.

Visser said that Afrihost is planning to launch the new service within the next week or two.

Cell C first reduced its standard data rate to R0.15c per MB for in- and out-of-bundle usage across its entire data product portfolio, making it the operator with the lowest OOB rate in the country.

However, from 1 May 2014, the operator hiked its out-of-bundle rates back to a standard R0.99c across all its packages.

Out of bundle data rates for the other South African networks vary depending on the service clients have signed up for, but typically cost R2.00 per MB on Vodacom’s network and R1.00 per MB for Telkom Mobile and MTN.

Afrihost’s mobile services run off of MTN’s network, using its own Access Point Name (APN) on the network.

According to an in-depth OOB rate comparison compiled by MyBroadband, while Cell C’s raised rate is competitive when it comes to data bundles – as far as data contracts are concerned, it now has the most expensive OOB rate in the country.
