Residents of Steyn City, the R6 billion mixed-use lifestyle development in the north of Johannesburg, will benefit from fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services, according to its developers.

Insurance tycoon, Douw Steyn, who was recently voted Britain’s 170th richest man with total wealth of £600 million (R10.5 billion), is behind the development along the Jukskei River in Johannesburg, between William Nicol Drive (R511) and Cedar Road.

On completion, it will comprise residential, commercial, retail and leisure components, an
18-hole Nicklaus Design championship golf course, all set within 1,000 acres of woodland.

Steyn City has a launch date for March 2015 and will provide residents with an interactive IPTV middleware that opens up direct portal on their TV sets enabling them access to the following key features:

  • Home multimedia sharing (homeowners will enjoy content from any smart device);
  • VoIP services on TV (voice mail and message notifications);
  • Web browsing on TV while simultaneously watching live TV;
  • Social media integration (Facebook, Twitter, etc..);
  • Security CCTV camera integration for TV set viewing;
  • Updated billing system information.

This information will be delivered on an open access FTTH network, allowing residents the freedom to choose a service provider of their choice.

The developers, Steyn City Properties, have built two Data Centres on site supporting a true broadband MSAN and triple-play services for residents and city stakeholders.

It would also leverage all resort technology communication requirements, some of which includes security surveillance, city management and metering systems.

“Steyn City’s FTTH network will provide our residents with a true Smart City lifestyle through our fully integrated, automated and intelligent city management system,” said Giuseppe Plumari, CEO of Steyn City Properties.

“The residents will be supported via a market leading web and app based portal allowing real-time full access to city and resident information such as city notifications, golf course and recreational facility bookings, utility billing and, internet usage statistics.”

“Our intent is to establish a connected community culture and provide its residents with all the conveniences that modern life demands.”
