Major 58-hour water outage in Joburg postponed

 ·19 Jun 2023

A 58-hour water outage that was supposed to affect over 100 areas in Johannesburg has been postponed.

The shutdown was supposed to start at 07h00 on Tuesday, 20 June and conclude at 15h00 on Thursday, 22 June, with a further five days needed for normal water supply to return.

However, Johannesburg Water said that the planned shutdown has been postponed until further notice.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo also confirmed to News24 that the planned maintenance will not occur this week.

Rand Water previously noted that the shutdown would allow it to upgrade the Eikenhof pump station, install isolation valves and tie the A19 and B14 lines with a new pipeline.

The shutdown would affect the Waterval 1&2, Weltevreden Roodepoort and Meredale 1&2 reservoirs.

As per the shutdown notice, areas receiving water from both Rand Water and Johannesburg Water were meant to be affected by the shutdown.

However, hospitals, clinics, schools, police stations, shopping centres and municipal offices would still receive alternative water supply.

BusinessTech contacted Rand Water to find out when the outages would now take place, but the group had not responded by the time of publishing.
