Good news for load shedding this week

 ·17 Dec 2023

Power utility Eskom says that it is forecasting no load shedding for the week ahead.

The group said that following the load shedding suspension last week, improved generating capacity means that the suspension of outages can continue.

Load shedding will be suspended until Friday, 22 December 16h00 at least, it said.

“Eskom will closely monitor the power system and communicate should any significant changes occur,” it said.

The country is currently experiencing much lower demand due to the festive season, while unplanned outages are also below 12,500MW.

The evening peak demand forecast is 23,471MW. Unplanned outages are currently at 12,158MW and planned maintenance is 8,728MW of generation capacity.

2023 has been the worst year on record for load shedding by a significant margin, with South Africans experiencing more than double the blackout hours than in 2022.
