Major baggage blunder at SA airports – here’s what’s happening
Airports Company South Africa has issued an apology over a “technical problem” at the domestic terminal of OR Tambo International Airport that saw baggage miss scheduled flights.
The glitch happened over the weekend (22 and 23 December) where the baggage sortation system failed to load luggage onto scheduled departing flights.
As a result, luggage had to be loaded onto later flights.
ACSA said that passengers were unable to collect their luggage upon landing, and the respective airlines are now making plans to have the luggage delivered or organising with affected passengers to collect their baggage at a convenient time.
“Technicians are working tirelessly to resolve this issue, and as of the evening of 23rd December, the system has been stabilised, but further investigations and root cause analysis are in progress to implement a permanent fix,” ACSA said.
In response to the situation, ACSA said it is working in conjunction with airlines and Ground Handling Companies to implement a manual contingency process and ACSA will also be working with and supporting airlines to ensure that arrangements are made for bags to be reconciled with their owners.
“ACSA advises travellers to arrive early at the airport to allow for sufficient time for passenger processing. Passengers are also requested to contact their airlines lost property office for all baggage enquiries.
“Once again, ACSA sincerely apologises to our travellers and customers for the inconvenience caused, and to thank passengers and airlines for their patience and understanding during this disruption,” it said.
