ANC mayor Jordaan not billed for electricity for 7 years: report

 ·13 Jun 2015

Danny Jordaan has not been billed for electricity by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro for more than seven years, according to a new report.

Jordaan was recently appointed by the ANC as mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, while he is also serving as president of the South African Football Association (SAFA).

The Weekend Post reported that it was shown documents that revealed that he has not paid for electricity at his Summerstrand home since 2007.

“The documents show that although the figures from the electricity meter have not moved after it burnt out in 2007, the municipality failed to pick this up and restore it until a month ago,” the Weekend Post reportedly said.

The meter had been reported to authorities a year ago by a company who had been contracted to clamp down on illegal connections.

A municipal spokesperson told the paper that the Jordaan family had reported the faulty meter, adding that the house had not been billed between 2007 and 2015.

The wife of Jordaan said that the municipality had admitted blame because of a faulty meter.

In April 2015, Eskom announced plans to interrupt bulk electricity supply to the top 20 defaulting municipalities across the country.

According to the struggling power utility, as at 31 March 2015, the total municipal arrears debt greater than 30 days was R4.6 billion.

The group said it would stop power supply to the 20 identified municipalities, with effect from 5 June 2015, but has since negotiated a payment plan with the culprits.

Jordaan is also at the centre of a bribery allegation within FIFA, for his involvement in the bidding and hosting of the World Cup 2010.

He was the head of the committee that oversaw South Africa’s 2010 World Cup bid. The government has denied any wrong doing, while the matter is being investigated by the FBI.
