Work begins on new submarine cable for South Africa

Mauritius registered company, IOX Cable and Alcatel Submarine Networks have commenced work on a new submarine IOX Cable System.

The cable will be 8,850km long and will be completed in 2019. It will connect Mauritius and Rodrigues to the east coast of South Africa, and will “enhance communication capabilities along the India-to-South Africa route”.

The system will deliver an ultimate design capacity of over 54 terabits per second and will also reinforce Mauritius as a hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

“This is a significant achievement in making the Indian Ocean islands a key gateway between Asia and Africa with onward connectivity to Europe, Middle East, and the Americas,” IOX said.
