International giant officially exits South Africa

Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa has officially rebranded as Deneys, becoming independent following the exit of its international parent.

In 2011, Norton Rose combined with Canadian law firm Ogilvy Renault and South African firm Deneys Reitz to create Norton Rose Fulbright.

This created a Top 10 global legal practice with 38 offices and 2,500 legal staff worldwide.

The company announced last year that it would exit its South African operations, with the South African operations having now reclaimed the Deneys title.

The firm said that reclaiming the title signals a respect for its heritage and a clear intention to
evolve it independently in tune with a changing world.

“For more than a century, our firm has adapted through political shifts, market cycles and technological disruption,” said Chief Executive Officer Brent Botha.

“By anchoring our next chapter in a century of trust, we are creating a platform that allows us to invest, innovate and evolve in direct response to our clients’ priorities.”

Botha added that independence will give the firm the freedom to make decisions quickly, build partnerships on its own terms, and invest directly in what matters most to its clients and its people.

Deneys will start the next chapter with three offices across South Africa and over 200 legal staff, which will continue to work with its established client base.

Ahead of the transition, the firm continued to strengthen its leadership and talent base, which includes several promotions and new hires at its Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg offices.

Further appointments are also planned as the firm invests in building its leadership pipeline under the Deneys banner.

“Our people are the foundation of our success. Creating opportunities for talented lawyers to grow, lead and shape the future of the profession is a priority for us,” said Botha.

“Transformation is a core strategic commitment, and as Deneys we strive to build a firm that reflects the diversity and talent of the profession and the society it serves.”

The launch of Deneys is accompanied by a refreshed brand identity and digital presence under the strapline “As the world moves.”

“South Africa is where we stand. Africa and the world are where we look,” added Botha. “Deneys is the firm for what lies ahead.”
