Public Protector worried that South Africans don’t trust her: report
Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has raised concerns about the “discontent” and “distrust” surrounding her office, according to a report by EWN.
In her first public Stakeholder Forum at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday (16 February), Mkhwebane said she sought to communicate her vision to stakeholders, increase access, and solicit views on what stakeholders expected from her office.
“Some of you have been outspoken on all platforms; during phone-in programmes on radio, social media and other channels. You voiced your apparent frustrations with us while others were being supportive,” Mkhwebane said.
“This road show presents an opportunity for you to engage us directly. I urge you to bring your concerns and suggestions to our attention so that, together, we may find ways of ensuring that this office lives up to its constitutional mandate and works for you.”
However, a copy of Mkhwebane’s stakeholder speech leaked to EWN and indicates that vocal dissent of her time in office was seriously concerning to her.
The speech noted that the public protector’s office was “not an island”, and for it to function effectively, it needed to enjoy the backing of stakeholders.
Despite the concern, Mkhwebane reportedly skipped the section of her speech.
