Takealot expands 1-hour delivery service – these are the new areas
TakealotNow, the E-commerce giant’s 1-hour delivery service, has expanded into Pretoria.
Through TakealotNow, Takealot products can be delivered within minutes via the Mr D app.
The service is available from 08h00 to 20h00 daily.
Following the expansion, TakealotNow will be available in Johannesburg, Cape Town’s central and northern suburbs, and Pretoria.
Following its launch in the greater Cape Town area, Takealot Group CEO Frederik Zietsman said that TakealotNow provides a shift for the industry, which is primarily focused on groceries, to offer a diverse range of products.
“From last-minute orders for toys for kids’ birthday parties to quick replacements for broken small appliances, this evolution maintains our reputation for value and convenience, putting the needs of South Africans at the core of our business,” said Zietsman
“This expansion marks another exciting milestone for us [as] TakealotNOW seamlessly integrates with the Mr D app, offering our customers the same trusted, effortless convenience Mr D is known for now with a greater variety of choice, fast,” added Alex Wörz, CEO of Mr D.

Competition time
TakealotNow’s launch comes amidst heightened competition in the e-commerce space, with US giant Amazon officially launching its online marketplace in South Africa earlier this year.
In its latest results for the financial year ended 31 March 2024, Naspers (Takealot’s parent company) also highlighted the inroads that Temu and Shein have made in the South African market.
Takelot also registered a heavy R253 million loss for the 2024 financial year, although this was an improvement from the R400 million loss in the prior year.
Naspers noted that normalised consumer behaviour post-pandemic and a challenging economic environment was prevalent throughout the year.
That said, Mr D, in which TakealotNow is found, became profitable for the first time, with a trading profit of US$3 million (R55 million) for the financial year.
