DStv officially announces new channels, new packages and new pricing in South Africa
On top of an overhaul of its packages and pricing in South Africa, DStv will be getting a revamped branding as part of its new era under French media giant Canal+.
According to MyBroadband, which attended the unveiling event on Monday (7 September), the new branding and slogan “Expect+” align with the group’s new owner.
Canal+ acquired DStv’s parent group, Multichoice, at the end of 2025 in a deal valued at over R50 billion.
In early 2026, Canal+ announced an R1.9 billion “boost plan” to help turn around the struggling media group’s operations.
As part of that plan, the group wanted to streamline DStv’s package offerings, which it said had become confusing and unwieldy.
Ahead of Monday’s event, a leak on the DStv website revealed the biggest change in this direction—a simplification of the group’s content packages and channels, along with new pricing.
DStv has now confirmed the packages, declaring it a “new era for DStv”, and that subscribers should expect ‘more’, ie, “Expect+”.
Speaking about the changes, MultiChoice CEO Wellington Ngwepe said the package overhaul was needed to keep pace with evolving viewer tastes.
He said the packages, in place for 15 years, had not kept pace with changing viewer habits.
“We’ve engaged with customers and heard the message loud and clear. They want more value and a simplified offering,” he said.
“What we are providing is something built around customer needs, rather than overlapping packages that try to be something for everybody.”
Ngwepe said that the other critical issue is providing additional content, which is why the group is bringing new channels while revamping existing channels.
New channels include entertainment channel Wethu+ and SuperSport Kickoff.
The CEO said that the group is strengthening movie channels with M-Net Movies+, M-Net Movies Stars and M-Net Movies Legends.
Sports channels will also be renamed, such as SuperSport Football Plus, SuperSport Africa, SuperSport Extra and SuperSport Extra 2.
Third-party channels will also be added, including France24 and Church TV.
On pricing, the CEO said that the new pricing applies to the new streaming packages, but the Direct-to-Home satellite pricing has not changed.
“We haven’t changed our pricing. The price points stay the same. The [new] pricing is specifically for the streaming offering, but the DTH pricing has not changed,” he said.
The new packages include a brand-new standalone package for movies and series, and an overhauled sports package called DStv Sports.
The new packages are expected to launch on 17 September. The packages are Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium.
The Starter package will cost R99 per month and offer 85 channels, including some sports, characterised as a “taster” for what DStv has to offer.
Prices jump to R299 per month for Select, with 100 channels and additional sports content.
A package many subscribers have been calling for is a separate Sports package, which will carry 115 channels and offer even more sports content, as well as some entertainment channels, for R399 a month.
The Movies & Series package will start at R500 per month and will carry 115 channels with a stronger entertainment focus, including M-Net, kykNET, and M Movies+.
The Premium package is the only legacy DStv package that retains its name and will cost R799 per month for 130 TV channels.
The table below outlines the new packages:
| New Package | Channels | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 85 | R99 |
| Select | 100 | R299 |
| Sports | 115 | R399 |
| Movies & Series | 115 | R500 |
| Premium | 130 | R799 |
