Vodacom: mobile prices aren’t that high

South African mobile prices have to come down, but they are not as high as the comparison of headline pricing suggests, Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub told attendees of the 2013 MyBroadband Conference on 9 October 2013.

He said that in reality, no-one pays the high-level prices. By way of example, he said that the effective pre-paid call rate on Vodacom is 64c/minute.

“As an industry we’ve been our own worst enemies,” Joosub said, explaining that they created these high-level tariffs despite them being higher than most customers pay.

For this reason, Joosub said that they are only selling their new plans.

“If we create the impression that the prices are high, there will be consequences,” Joosub said.
