New mall set to open in South Africa this year –  a big boost for its home town

 ·12 Apr 2024

Construction is underway on the new shopping centre in the Madombidhza township in Limpopo.

Located near Louis Trichardt (Makado), the 9,200 sqm centre plans to open in September 2024.

MDS Architecture designed the single-level shopping centre for McCormick Property Development.

Louis Pretorius, MDS Architecture partner, said that the Mall will serve a large catchment area.

“The prominent walkway and covered entrance are marked by two striking steel column structures in vibrant colours that seem to hold up the overhead roof. Elements of the angular structure – a play on the letter M – are duplicated along the covered walkway of the shopping centre,” said Pretorius.

The Mall will be located at the entrance into the Madombidzha village from the town of Makhado on the main taxi and bus route surrounding villages into Makhado town.

Facilities near the site include a church, public clinic and pre-school.

A new traffic circle has been made at the entrance to provide easy access to the Mall.

McCormick Property Development’s Jason McCormick told BusinessTech that there are very limited formal retail options in the area, with Madombidzha Mall providing easy access to essential retailers.

“The mall will be built in a phased approach with room to expand to the full potential of the market,” said McCormick.

Phase one of the development will include nearly 40 tenants, with anchor tenants of Shoprite and Roots.

Several restaurants will be located in the food court area by the Mall’s entrance, with external converted seating. The Mall will also have a KFC drive-thru.
