Big growth in Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo smartphone use by tech-savvy South Africans

 ·9 Apr 2024

Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo smartphone use by tech-savvy South Africans has increased significantly in recent years, thanks to aggressive marketing campaigns and strong value-for-money product positioning.

This was a key finding from a recent analysis of unique device usage on the MyBroadband Speed Test smartphone app.

The MyBroadband Speed Test is South Africa’s leading connectivity speed test platform. It is available across a range of devices – including as an app for Android smartphones.

Users of the MyBroadband Speed Test app are typically tech-savvy South Africans who advise their businesses, friends, and family on which ICT products and services to buy.

Big growth

Looking at the number of unique devices using the Android version of the MyBroadband Speed Test app to conduct speed tests, it is clear that Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo are growing their smartphone market share among tech-savvy South Africans.

Xiaomi is the leading challenger brand at the start of 2024, with a 7% share of unique device app usage. This is compared to a 3% share in 2020.

It is followed by Oppo, Honor, and Vivo – all of which have increased their share since 2020.

The graph below details the growth of Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Vivo, based on an analysis of MyBroadband Speed Test app usage.

Samsung vs Huawei

Looking at all the smartphone brands represented in the Android speed test data set, Samsung is the clear leader in terms of device share.

Samsung sits at 65% of device share at the start of 2024 – up from 49% in 2020.

This is in stark contrast to Huawei. At the start of 2024, Huawei held a 12% share – a large decline from its 38% share in 2020.

The decrease in share coincides with Huawei smartphones losing access to Google Mobile Services in 2019 – following an executive order from then-US president Donald Trump.

At the other end of the table, Hisense claimed a 1% share, Nokia (HMD) a 0.6% share, Honeywell a 0.5% share, and LG a 0.5% share.

It is interesting to note that Nokia’s share of unique device usage has dropped to 0.6% in 2024 from 1.4% in 2020.
