Business Talk – Professor Ann Skelton of the University of Pretoria on environmental challenges that impact children

In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, Professor Ann Skelton – who is the UNESCO Chair in Education Law at the University of Pretoria – discusses the biggest environmental factors that impact children.

Alongside her work at the University of Pretoria, Professor Skelton is a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde and teaches in the Oxford Masters programme on international human rights.

Professor Skelton has been recognised globally with several awards, including the Honorary Worlds Children’s Prize awarded by the Queen of Sweden, and the Juvenile Justice Without Borders Award.

She has also chaired several international bodies, including the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of their Liberty, and the expert committee that drafted the Abidjan Principles on the state’s obligations regarding public education and the regulation of private education.

Professor Skelton currently serves as the Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.

The interview

In this Business Talk interview, Professor Skelton begins by explaining why she is so passionate about children’s rights and how this work intersects with environmental sustainability.

She then discusses what she will cover in her upcoming expert lecture – including how child activists are at the forefront of the environmental protection agenda and how we are all obliged to preserve the environment for future generations.

Professor Skelton also discusses her role in various children’s rights groups, including the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the South African Law Reform Commission.
