Largest retailer in South Africa opening a new store every two days
Shoprite has opened 61 new stores in South Africa over the last four months, as the country’s largest retailer continues to expand its footprint.
In an operational update published on the Stock Exchange News Service (SENS)on 6 November, Shoprite said it had opened 71 stores in the last four months, with 61 of these in South Africa.
A net 61 stores were opened in our core Supermarkets RSA segment, which forms the foundation of our Group ecosystem strategy,” the retailer said.
This means the retailer has opened an average of 15 stores every month, and one new store every two days.
Of these new stores, 32 were supermarkets, 21 were LiquorShops, and 18 were part of the group’s adjacent businesses, including Petshop Science, Uniq, and Checkers Outdoor, with ten stores closed in the same period.
Alongside aggressive expansion, the group said its sales volumes increased year-on-year in the four months ended 30 October.
Group sales volumes increased by 6.4%, while its South African supermarkets segment reported growth of 7.1%, and supermarkets outside South Africa saw growth of 7%.
In its other operating segments, the retailer noted a decline in sales of approximately 1.5%.
The company said its internal selling price inflation had remained in line with what it had previously reported for the four month period.
“Internal selling price inflation has remained in line with the 0.6% previously reported for July 2026, measuring 0.7% for the four-month period,” it said.
It said this segment has been supported by the strong performances from both Checkers and Checkers Hyper.
The group also saw sales from its Sixty60 service increase considerably by 33.4% in the last four months.
“The segment continues to benefit from the positive mix effect resulting from Checkers and Checkers Hyper’s leading sales growth, supported by the Group’s on-demand digital commerce platform Sixty60, which increased sales by 33.4% for the four months,” Shoprite said.
In Shoprite’s pharmacy business, sales increased by 17.6% year-on-year for the four-month period, driven by strong performance from Transpharm.
The group also noted that the sale of its furniture division was still subject to certain regulatory approvals.
“The sale of the South African Furniture division remains subject to approval by the Competition Tribunal,” Shoprite said.
