Massive water outages hit parts of Joburg – these are the areas affected

 ·3 Oct 2022

Johannesburg Water has urged customers to reduce consumption as its reservoirs and towers continue to be at critical levels, following constant power trips caused by load shedding.

“Various Rand Water systems are still recovering from the recent power outages,” it said in a statement. The reduction in flow has seen several Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers with critically low to empty water levels.

The group said that supply at Commando Road Meter, Central, Sandton, Roodepoort and Soweto systems are being monitored.

Highly impacted areas include:

  • Commando system: Crosby, Brixton, and Hursthill are all critically low.
  • Soweto systems: Eagles Nest, Glenvista, and Naturena reservoirs are low at all levels.
  • Central systems: Crown Gardens tower is at critically low levels.
  • Roodepoort systems: Impacted systems are at low levels.
  • Sandton systems: Alexander Park reservoir is at low levels.

The group said that customers in higher-lying areas will experience low pressure/no water during this period.

Johannesburg Water, meanwhile, was also forced to shut down the supply to the northern suburbs of the city on Sunday to attend to a major burst. Bryanston reservoir and tower were isolated at 05h00 on 3 October 2022.

Affected areas include parts of: Bryanston, Lyme Park, Rivonia, Fourways, Douglasdale, Magaliesig, Witkoppen, Maroeladal, Craigavon, Dainfern, Kengies, Lonehill, Beverly, Paulshof, Pineslopes, Magaliesig View and Noscot.

In an update on Monday afternoon, the water utility said that the welding work has been completed. “Water will be restored slowly at Bryanston reservoir and Tower. Teams will flush the system to remove air from the network. Full restoration may take some time as a large area has been impacted,” it said.

Meanwhile, residents in Sandton can expect disruptions through to 14 October.

The following suburbs will be affected:

  • Sandhurst;
  • Sandton City;
  • Parkmore;
  • Atholl Gardens;
  • Strathavon;
  • Morningside;
  • Hurlingham;
  • Benmore Gardens;
  • Inanda; and
  • New Brighton.
