Say goodbye to Google’s Windows desktop-based chat platform which is scheduled to be shut down on Monday (16 February).

Google recently sent out messages to users of the Windows Google Talk desktop app that its services will be ending on 16 February 2015.

The search giant said that the IM service will be wholly replaced by the Hangouts app, which is only available through using its Chrome browser.

It was previously understood that, although the Gtalk app will cease to function,  users would still be able to access their contacts through third party applications such as Pidgin, Adium and other Jabber-enabled clients.

However, according to The Register, quoting Google, the company is dropping the chat protocol (XMPP) used by the platform, altogether.

This means these third-party apps are unlikely to work after the switch-off.

“Hangouts will replace Google Talk and does not support XMPP,” it reportedly said.
