South Africa gets its first Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlour
Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream will open its first shop in Canal Walk, Cape Town, on 9 December 2016 – marking the brand’s entry into the local market, with more still to come.
The global ice cream parlour is part of the Dunkin Foods group – which also owns Dunkin Donuts – with the local brand owned and managed by Grand Parade Investments, the same company who handles Burger King in South Africa.
In January Grand Foods acquired the South African master franchise licences for Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, from the Dunkin’ Brands group.
Under the agreement, Grand Parade would develop more than 250 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants and more than 70 Baskin-Robbins shops in South Africa over the coming years, with an initial focus on Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The first Dunkin’ Donuts in South Africa launched in Goodwood, Cape Town, on 13 October. Since the launch, three more branches have been opened in Canal Walk, Long Street and Tygervalley shopping mall.
According to Baskin-Robbins SA COO, Sean Dearham, there is “demand for artisanal ice cream and a variety of flavours ” is on the rise in South Africa, and Baskin-Robbins is best known globally for its ‘31 flavours’ – a different flavour for each day of the month.
“South Africans can always look forward to something exciting at our ice cream shops and with the help of our famous ‘Pink Spoon’, guests can sample all 31 flavours until they find the flavour that makes them happiest,” he said.
Baskin-Robbins is the latest international franchise to land in South Africa, following the launch of Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts during the course of 2016.
