Eskom will implement stage 2 load shedding on Saturday and Sunday as the power utility deals with unforeseen breakdowns.
The power cuts will be introduced from 06h00 on Saturday (12 December) and will run until 23h00. The same schedule will be implemented on Sunday (13 December), Eskom said in a statement on Friday.
The power utility said that it needs to implement load shedding to replenish the depleted emergency generation reserves for the coming week.
“As Eskom ramps up its planned maintenance during the lower demand summer period, it has had a large number of unforeseen breakdowns from the ageing, unreliable plant(s) over the past few days.”
Eskom said that it has 7,452 MW of planned maintenance, while another 10,208 MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned maintenance.
“Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many of these units to service as soon as possible.” it said.
