Eskom suspends load shedding – stage 4 is back tonight
Update: Eskom says load shedding will remain suspended until 16h00 on Saturday. Thereafter, stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from 16h00 until 05h00 tomorrow.
On Sunday, load shedding will be suspended from 05h00 until 16h00. Eskom will publish a further update on Sunday afternoon.
Original story: Power utility Eskom suspended load shedding on Saturday (3 June) due to improved generation capacity and lower demand.
Load shedding was suspended at 11h40 and will remain suspended until further notice.
“Eskom will communicate immediately when any significant changes occurs,” it said.
The group initially planned to suspend load shedding on Sunday between 05h00 and 16h00, with outages expected to ramp up back to stage 4 in the evening.
Given the lower weekend demand compared to week days, it’s fair to assume that load shedding will return in the week ahead.
The power utility has been struggling to keep outages below 18,000MW in recent weeks, while demand has been around 32,000MW as the country enters winter.
Weekend demand lowers significantly as industries shut down, and the evening and morning peaks from households are spread out more evenly.
The government and Eskom have appealed to South Africans to “do their part” in stabilising the grid by lowering their demand. The government has detailed its plans and progress made in resolving the crisis, but none of the solutions on offer are short-term or will resolve the imminent winter strain.
