Internet access will become free: Vox Telecom CEO

Vox Telecom CEO Douglas Reed says that South African consumers can look forward to a positive trend of declining broadband prices and improved services for the foreseeable future.

Reed said that he does not expect any major factors forcing a quantum change on either the technology or regulatory front, but the trend of lower broadband prices and better services will continue.

“Eventually Internet access to the consumer will tend to be free or close to free like other communication mediums like TV and radio,” said Reed.

“Advertisers would pay extensively for targeted, niche and relevant marketing to profiled individuals, which would subsidise access for those that can’t afford to pay for it.”

One of the interventions which many South Africans think will drive down fixed broadband prices is Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), but Reed said that it may come too late.

“When LLU is a reality, it will be far too late to impact on the broadband services available in SA. We have far more options now, like improved fibre networks and LTE,” said Reed.
