Top Christmas gifts online in SA

Home entertainment tops South Africa’s Christmas wish list this year, according to online retailer Takealot.com.

The e-commerce site noted that tech was most likely to be snapped up during the festive season, while kids remain a priority with four of the ten most popular gifts in its chart intended for the younger members of the family.

Takealot’s Top 10 Christmas Gifts for 2014 are as follows:

  3. DStv Explora HD Decoder
  4. Sennheiser HD 429 West Headphones
  5. Lego Star Wars Darth Vader Watch with Minifigure

  7. SpaceRail Space Rail Level 4
  8. Construction Train Set Bridge
  9. Girls Kitchen Workbench
  10. Maleficent (DVD)

Takealot also revealed the top 5 product categories for Christmas gift shopping on its site.

It said that even though the most popular Christmas gift, the Chromecast Media Player, was found under the “TV, Audio and Video” category, it was the Computer category which dominated the Top 100 gift purchases overall.

Takealot’s Top 5 Christmas gift categories are:

In a separate study, Multiply, the wellness and rewards programme offered by Momentum, found that 15% of respondents plan to buy their Christmas gifts online this year, with nearly one third of those clicking to complete their festive season purchases during the first half of December.

Twenty-two percent of respondents do their festive season shopping online all year through, with 14% leaving it to the last possible minute.

The most popular gift category was the ‘home and lifestyle’ category, with a little more than half of respondents saying that they would buy these gifts.

The next most popular category was toys and games, with 19% of respondents purchasing these, followed by technology.

Of the respondents that have children, and that are buying gifts for them, nearly half will purchase between two and five gifts for their offspring, while one third will buy their child a single, large gift.

Of those buying gifts for their children, one third will spend between R500 and R1,000 on each child, with a further one third spending between R250 and R500.

Respondents spend more money on their partners than they spend on their children, with 29% saying that they will spend more than R1,000 on a gift for their significant other, and a further 29% saying that they will spend between R500 and R1,000.
