Pictures: Vandals destroy DA billboard
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says that a billboard it erected in Johannesburg at the launch of its ‘Jobs Campaign’ earlier this month has been vandalised and destroyed.
The political party said in a statement on Monday (25 January) that while the full details are emerging, it is believed that a group broke into the building, and forced their way into apartments to gain access to the billboard.
“This act of desperation and thuggery highly resembles the conduct of ANC councillors and members in Cape Town, when they ripped down the ‘Zuma Must Fall’ billboard,” it said.
“Given this noticeable similarity and the ANC’s vehement opposition to the billboard – which reveals the number of South Africans who have joined the ranks of the unemployed under President Zuma – we call on the ANC to urgently confirm or deny whether they are behind this destruction.”
DA national spokesperson, Refiloe Nt’sekhe, said that the party will be laying criminal charges for criminal conduct as soon as possible.
The political party unveiled the billboard in the centre of Johannesburg on 7 January ‘that will serve as a reminder to us of how many of our fellow citizens lose hope every day by joining the ranks of the unemployed’.
The billboard contained a live ticker that will start on 1,842,852 and count up by one new jobless person every 112 seconds, to show the total of 774 people that become jobless in every 24 hour cycle under the leadership of president Zuma’s ANC government.
The DA said it will be marching to the now vandalized billboard on Wednesday, 27 January 2016, in solidarity with the 1.8 million South Africans who have joined the ranks of the unemployed under President Zuma.
