10 places you are most likely to fail matric
Most matriculants around the country this week celebrated successfully finishing their school career – 70.7% of pupils to be exact.
But the reality for pupils in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, especially, is a lot more dismal.
If you are a matric pupil in some of these provinces’ districts, there is around a 50% chance that you will fail. This is according to stats from the 2015 National Senior Certificate Technical Report.
Here are the worst performing districts in the country, based on the percentage of pupils who wrote and passed.
1) Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape (46.3% pass rate)
2) Umzinyathi in KwaZulu-Natal (46.6% pass rate)
3) Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape (47.2% pass rate)
4) Qumbu in the Eastern Cape (47.9% pass rate)
5) Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape (48.1% pass rate)
6) Libode in the Eastern Cape (48.6% pass rate)
7) Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape (49.7% pass rate)
8) Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape (49.8% pass rate)
9) Ilembe in KwaZulu-Natal (51.9% pass rate)
10) Dutywa in the Eastern Cape (52.2% pass rate)
The Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal education systems needed urgent and drastic measures, Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools CEO Paul Colditz told News24.
“If you take these provinces away, you’d probably have a pass rate of about 80%.”
He said the negative influence of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union, and a lack of political will and proper leadership, were to blame.
“I don’t know what the answer is, but ministers and national government will have to come up with very drastic measures to get those provinces on track, otherwise they are going to be declining into ‘junk status’.”
