Watch: Molefe dances as Eskom employees welcome him back to work

 ·15 May 2017

Returning Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has made his way back to the power utility’s HQ, dancing along to a raucous welcome back from Eskom employees.

Footage from the SABC has captured the moment Molefe walked in at Eskom’s Megawatt Offices on Monday (15 May), to cheers, singing and ululating from the state utility’s employees.

Molefe then broke into dance as the crowd cheered.

The CEO was back at his old job on Monday despite protests and outcry from the ANC and opposition parties alike that his return was ordered and approved by government.

Molefe stepped down from his position in 2016, after being implicated in the Public Protector’s State of Capture report, in which he was found to be in direct contact with the Gupta family over a short period of time.

It has been alleged that the executive was a key player in much of the support the Gupta family received from Eskom, including favourable contract negotiations, as well as a loan in the form of forward payments, which allowed the family to purchase Optimum Coal mines from Glencore.

When he resigned, Molefe said it was with good governance in mind.

However, as part of his exit deal, he was to be handed a R30 million golden handshake, which, when brought to light, was challenged by the department of Public Enterprises.

Minister Lynne Brown ordered the Eskom board to negotiate a better deal. When an agreement couldn’t be reached, the board decided to rescind Molefe’s “retirement” and reappoint him as CEO.

On Monday the DA announced that it would be taking the legal route to have Molefe’s reappointment blocked.
