New R370 million shopping mall opens in South Africa

Following some slight delays and a postponement, the Riverstone Mall in Meyerton, Gauteng, has fully opened and launched.
Originally set to open its doors in late March 2025, the launch of the mall was pushed back to April and then postponed again due to minor flooding following heavy rains.
However, as of May 2025, the mall is open to the public and trading with 61 stores and free parking seven days a week.
At 20,000 square metres, Riverstone is a sizeable retail centre in the Meyerton region, part of a R600 million investment by developer Alley Roads.
Construction commenced in 2024 on the R370 million project, boosting jobs and development in the area. Development was completed in March 2025.
Ahead of the mall’s launch in 2024, Midvaal mayor Peter Teixeira described the project as a “first of its kind” for the region, with Meyerton in particular not having such a large retail centre.
Teixeira, as well as his party, the Democratic Alliance, highlighted the importance of the project and Alley Roads’ wider investment in the region as pivotal in driving economic growth in the area.
He said the project would also be a catalyst for further development, bringing people in from nearby areas to stimulate growth.
Unfortunately, ahead of the planned opening on 27 March, the mall experienced flooding following heavy rains, which resulted in the launch being postponed as damage was assessed.
The mall is anchored by Checkers Fresh-X, Woolworths Food and Dischem, with other tenants including Clicks, Truworths, Mr Price and the Pepkor group.
It also features has over 1,000 parking bays, a food court, as well as two fast food drive-thru outlets.
The mall will also tap into solar energy to cover operations during any potential outages and to protect against load shedding.
While South Africa had experienced about nine months without scheduled outages, load shedding made an unwelcome return in 2025.
The mall features a 1,908 kVA solar plant installed on the roof with a battery backup of 4,800 kWh, equivalent to four hours of 1,200 kVA.
