Vodacom says that its Appia-powered app store now offers over 120,000 apps for download, while social network apps – led by Mxit, qeep and Facebook – remain the most popular downloads.
Vodacom was the first network operator to launch a local app store in September 2011, and offers users over 120,000 apps for a variety of handsets. The store offers free apps, as well as “premium” apps which sell for between R5 and R50.
The apps are not smartphone dependent and can run on feature phones, depending on the the type on handset. Vodacom Apps support major mobile platforms including Android, BlackBerry, Java, Symbian and Windows Mobile.
Vodacom also runs the Vodacom Developer Program, which aims to boost local app developers in South Africa to design apps for the local store.
According to Vodacom, the most downloaded app from the store is social messaging platform, Mxit, followed by another mobile social network, qeep, and Facebook in third.
