6 new Chery SUVs coming to South Africa in 2025

 ·4 Jan 2025

Chery is set to expand its presence in South Africa by launching six new vehicles under its Omoda and Jaecoo (O&J) sub-brands throughout 2025.

Since debuting in April 2023 and April 2024, respectively, the Omoda and Jaecoo have rapidly gained traction in the local market.

By October, they impressively climbed to 15th place in the national sales rankings out of more than 50 manufacturers.

Riding this momentum, Chery aims to bolster its lineup to capture even more market share.

Two new models from Omoda and four additions from Jaecoo will headline Chery’s ambitious product rollout for next year.

Leading the charge for Omoda is the all-new C7, which slots between the compact C5 and the flagship C9 in the brand’s SUV range.

The C7 is distinguished by its bold design, featuring a frameless X-shaped grille and sleek, flowing headlights that accentuate its sporty, modern look.

With a length of 4,621mm and a wheelbase of 2,700mm, it rivals popular mid-size SUVs like the Toyota RAV4.

Inside, the C7 offers a premium experience with leather upholstery, a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and an immersive 14-speaker sound system.

Omoda is also making its first entry into the hybrid market with the launch of the C9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

While the petrol-powered C9, equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 192kW and 400Nm, is already available, the upcoming PHEV version is set to broaden the vehicle’s appeal.

This variant features a smaller 1.5-litre engine paired with up to three electric motors, offering a blend of efficiency and performance.

Though exact specifications for the South African market have yet to be confirmed, Omoda promises the C9 PHEV will deliver a luxury driving experience while remaining sustainable and refined.

Jaecoo, on the other hand, is preparing an even bigger product onslaught for 2025, starting with its entry-level J5.

Designed to be Jaecoo’s most affordable model, the J5 adopts a rugged aesthetic similar to its larger sibling, the J7, with striking vertical grille slats and squared-off proportions that combine urban sophistication with off-road toughness.

Inside, the J5 doesn’t skimp on features, boasting a 13.2-inch touchscreen and the largest panoramic sunroof in its class, measuring 1.45m².

Additional highlights include advanced climate control, a high-efficiency air filtration system, and optional pet-friendly accessories catering to a variety of lifestyles.

Jaecoo is also set to make waves in the electric vehicle space with the launch of the all-electric J6.

Positioned as a premium crossover, the J6 brings a compelling mix of capability and technology. Internationally, it is offered in two powertrain options: a two-wheel-drive version delivering 184kW and 220Nm, and a more robust four-wheel-drive variant with 279kW and 385Nm.

Luxury touches abound inside the cabin, including electrically adjustable and massaging front seats, along with a large 15.6-inch infotainment display.

Final specifications for the South African market will be revealed closer to its release.

The popular J7 range will also receive an upgrade with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid version.

Currently available only as a petrol-powered model, the J7 PHEV showcases impressive efficiency, having completed a 1,300km endurance test in China with an average fuel consumption of just 3.3L/100km—far lower than its official 5.99L/100km figure.

The vehicle also claims an electric-only range of 90km, but real-world testing revealed an even better result of 125.2km.

Jaecoo has noted that these figures could differ slightly for the South African market but remains confident in the model’s performance and efficiency.

Rounding out Jaecoo’s lineup for next year is the range-topping J8, which will serve as the brand’s flagship SUV.

Designed to accommodate up to seven passengers, the J8 combines spaciousness with power, courtesy of its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 195kW and 400Nm.

Measuring 4,815mm in length, 1,924mm in width, and 1,710mm in height, it will be one of the larger SUVs in its class, offering a commanding presence on the road.

Chery’s aggressive expansion plan for Omoda and Jaecoo in 2025 reflects the brand’s confidence in South Africa’s growing appetite for SUVs.

With stylish designs, cutting-edge technology, and options ranging from affordable entry-level models to luxurious plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, Chery’s latest offerings are set to make a significant mark on the market.
