A look at Engen’s new premium facelift – including a ‘convenience café’ rolling out across South Africa
Fuel retailer Engen is giving its forecourt convenience store, Quickshop, a huge facelift and launching a new premium 24-hour café brand called Café 365.
Café 365 will be housed in Engen’s new-look Quickshop & Co premium stores, the group said, with plans to roll out the new café offering nationally by the end of 2023.
The first two are set to officially open in the Western Cape in November at Engen Protea Heights Convenience Centre in Brackenfell and Engen Tierberg Convenience Centre in Parow, the group said.
According to Engen’s general manager for retail, Enoch Hermanus, Café 365 will offer a “convenient food experience”, with a range of everyday treats, baked goods and healthy snacks, accompanied by Engen’s unique blend of coffee that originates from Guatemala, Brazil and Tanzania.
Engen’s forecourt facelift comes amid heightened competition in the South African convenience retail space.
Millat Convenience, a subsidiary of Millat Group, announced at the end of September that it would be bringing one of the biggest convenience retail brand in the United States – Circle K – to South Africa in 2022.
The Circle K brand offers fresh food, hot and cold beverages and other convenience products, as well as fuel stations and electric vehicle charging.

Other big changes coming to forecourts in South Africa is bidding farewell to the Caltex brand, which is currently being rebranded across the country to Astron Energy.
Astron Energy took over ownership of the prolific Caltex brand in 2018 and unveiled the first of its new rebranded forecourts in South Africa back in September, announcing plans to overhaul all 850 service stations in the country with the new look.
The company’s Cape Town refinery, lubricants manufacturing plant in Durban, 15 terminals, 180 commercial and industrial sites, as well as corporate facilities will also be rebranded.
A total of 20 regional teams will work simultaneously across the country to rebrand forecourts to Astron Energy.
