Where to get the 2026 election results online
Newsday has developed a dedicated election portal where South Africans can track the 2026 local government elections in real time.
The 2026 Local Government Elections commenced across the country with special voting on Monday, 2 November, and Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
The main voting will take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, and is set to be a hotly contested affair in metropolitan areas.
Louw Nel, senior political analyst at Oxford Economics Africa, pointed out that support for the ANC could fall to between 31% and 34%.
This is driven by a big decline in South Africa’s largest cities, where the Democratic Alliance is set to dominate.
While some welcomed the prospect of change, others warned of downsides to a future of city hall coalition deals and closed-door negotiations.
“One problem with coalitions under the current legislation is that they are left to parties to negotiate amongst themselves,” said Joburg Crisis Alliance’s Yunus Chamda.
Shifting political alliances and a revolving door of mayors have contributed to worsening services and financial decline in Johannesburg.
The problems include giving small parties too much power and allowing politicians to evade accountability, Chamda said.
Johannesburg’s previous two mayors were from a party that held only 3 of 270 seats on the city council. The city has seen seven mayors since 2021.
“It’s created this huge instability. And when you confront political parties, they are able to divert the attack to the fact that it’s a coalition,” Chamda said.
Track the election results through Newsday’s election results portal

To make it easy for South Africans to follow the 2026 local government election results, Newsday has built a dedicated portal.
The portal offers all election data since 1999, making it easy for visitors to track changes in support for different political parties.
The election results include those for municipalities, provincial legislatures, and the national assembly.
Using the interactive map, users can zoom in on a local government region to view results for that municipality.
The portal will be updated in real time to keep visitors up to date with the latest results from South Africa’s 2026 local government elections.
